DVD Maker Review

Even though technology is moving onto storing data in digital form, maybe even in the cloud, files on a DVD or CD have always been a reliable method of keeping your files safe and for later re-use. Since DVD’s have been in use for so long, just about anything with an optical drive will play media files on them – whether it’s your Xbox 360, Playstation 3, or maybe an external disc reader. Windows 7 comes with a way to burn files to a CD or DVD, yet its DVD creation tool can be a little lacking in terms of overall customization. iOrgsoft DVD Maker, a $40 application dedicated to burning playable media on a DVD, aims to fill the gap that Windows fails to natively provide.

Sothink Web Video Downloader Review

Online video streaming sites are a hub for unique and interesting videos, requiring only a web browser and Internet access. View, play, and stream – no download is necessary, and videos are played almost instantly and are buffered as you watch. At times when you don’t have Internet access and you want to watch your favorite videos, you might be in trouble – most video sites won’t support downloading their hosted videos, so a third-party tool is necessary. Enter Sothink Web Video Downloader, a desktop application that scans for and captures streaming videos. Unlike many online download services, Sothink Web Video Downloader is claimed to be able to “Download any Videos You Are Viewing on Web” – and today, we’ll find out if it does that.

Beat Hazard Game Review

Beat Hazard

Music in games can be excellent, alright, or downright boring. Beat Hazard is a game where you choose your own music and play along to that, a unique twin-stick shooter that revolves exclusively around your music. Launch the game, explore your collection, pick a song, and get ready to shoot some bad guys. Even with strobe effects and lots of objects on the screen, Beat Hazard still manages to work itself out as a netbook game. It’s only ten bucks on Steam, so let’s go take it for a spin.

New Review Awards are here!

Oh boy, new awards!

Ever since I started reviewing software and hardware, I needed a sort of rating system. I came up with a set of three review awards – Gold(en), Silver, and Bronze. I made the original awards back when I wrote my first few reviews, and although they served me well, they didn’t quite hit the level of professionalism I was looking for. So I’ve taken the liberty to rebuild them from the ground up, and my, are they beautiful (well, that’s what I think).

SDExplorer Base Review

SDExplorer in Windows Explorer

Windows Live SkyDrive is a pretty awesome service – offering 25GB of free storage in the cloud, way more than DropBox’s puny 1GB of free storage. The big downside, though, is that the web interface really sucks. It’s slow, clunky, and it’s hard to perform even simple functions. Enter SDExplorer – an “application” that integrates your SkyDrive right into Windows Explorer so you can manage files just like any other hard drive on your system.

PDFZilla 1.2 Review

PDFZilla 1.2
PDF files are pretty popular and work as a universally accepted format – capable of embedding formatting that other file types can’t such as saving websites without the hassle of keeping track of each individual image on a website and its CSS template so everything looks correctly. Previously reviewed on Netbook Network was doPDF Free PDF Converter, a pretty sweet application for those who needed the ability to convert files to PDF quickly, accurately, and for free. Some users may want the exact opposite, however – turning PDF files into word documents, images, or HTML – and that’s what PDFZilla does. It’s quite hefty at $30 for an application, especially when there are free (and possibly easier to use) online applications that can do the same job – but maybe PDFZilla is miles better. Check out the review after the jump.

doPDF Free PDF Converter Review

PDF files are a (generally) universally accepted format – but most applications don’t natively support it. To view PDF files in Windows, you have to get a PDF reader such as the lightweight SumatraPDF. Creating them, though, requires another program. doPDF is a freeware program that allows applications to print to PDF. That means, if you have Word open, simply select the “Print” option, and you can choose to print as a PDF file. doPDF aims to be a no-frills and clean PDF printing solution – ideal for netbook owners. How well does it work? Read the review to find out!
