New Anti-Spam

About a week or two ago, there were some problems with our comment system. Normally, we keep the spambots at bay with a combination of Math Comment Spam Protection, an extra field in which you solve a simple math problem to confirm your human-ness, and Akismet, our automatic spam filter that catches spambots that know math. While having a math problem as a comment field drastically reduced the amount of spam we got, the plugin had a problem – sometimes even when you solved the problem correctly, it would tell you that you were incorrect and unfortunately, refuse to post your comment.

New Site Launch: Is My Internet Working?

Is My Internet Working?

I’m proud to announce that we’ve launched another site on our… network? That’s right! We have more than just one site now, and this one deviates from the world of netbooks to the world of routers, Internet-enabled devices, and long headaches with your ISP’s tech support. Is My Internet Working does more than tell you that your Internet is indeed working, but aims to be a reference guide to those who need help troubleshooting Internet connection issues.

New Review Awards are here!

2

Oh boy, new awards!

Ever since I started reviewing software and hardware, I needed a sort of rating system. I came up with a set of three review awards – Gold(en), Silver, and Bronze. I made the original awards back when I wrote my first few reviews, and although they served me well, they didn’t quite hit the level of professionalism I was looking for. So I’ve taken the liberty to rebuild them from the ground up, and my, are they beautiful (well, that’s what I think).

Netbook Network now supports mobile devices!

NBNW Mobile!

Just about everyone is moving along with the mobile revolution – manufacturers are pumping out smaller, thinner, sleeker devices that have been getting better and better over the last few years. Web browsing, though, is still best on an actual PC – with higher resolution viewing, faster page rendering, and more browser customization. Mobile device browsers just aren’t as capable as desktop browsers. So, what do we do? Make an optimized version of Netbook Network for mobile, that’s what!

Site updates: Speed, speed, speed

We're super fast now

I’ve been working a bunch behind the scenes to improve one thing lately – site load time. Netbooks are slow enough when it comes to rendering websites, and no one wants to visit a site that takes years to load. After a bunch of tweaking, it’s gotten a lot better now. It used to take me about seven seconds to load the main page, now it’s about four. Here’s a changelog of all the things I can remember doing.

  • The flash tag cloud was removed and replaced with a normal tag cloud. Yes, it was pretty, but it also took a while to load and took up a lot of space when the user didn’t have Flash installed.
  • All images are now compressed using Smush. It
  • Maximum posts per page has been reduced from eight to seven.
  • Javascript, HTML and CSS are all compressed using WP Minify. It reduces the amount of site requests and can significantly improve load times.

Happy 100 Posts on Netbook Network!

2

Netbook Network has gone quite a long way since it was originally unveiled. The first post was a simple “Hello World!” with a picture of a globe. I took down the picture, though, because it wasn’t mine. Back then, the site was using a different theme that wasn’t as blocky as this one – you can see it in a screenshot in one of our oldest posts. The site has gone a long way since then, with a totally new makeover only a few months in. We’ve been getting more and more spam comments, which (thankfully) have been blocked out by Akismet, an anti-spam plugin for WordPress. Born on June 28, 2010, only 6 months ago from now, NBNW has reached a total of 100 posts.
