Making Windows 7 More Touch Friendly

Big Buttons and Scrollbars!

With tablets all the rage these days, the touch-friendliness of operating systems on touchscreen devices plays a big role in the productivity and ease of use of these tablet devices. Windows 7 has been said to be the least touch-friendly of all tablet operating systems, even with some touch optimizations built in, due to the small on-screen buttons and lack of universal touch control support across all programs (such as tap and drag for scrolling or pinch to zoom). Fortunately, with a bit of tweaking, you can make Windows 7 a whole lot more finger-friendly and a generally much more usable experience.

Getting Live Speed Dials in Opera 11.5

2

Live Speed Dials, anyone?

One of the newest (and slightly overlooked) features in Opera 11.5 are the new live speed dials – or speed dials that update automatically with information. Normal speed dials will just link to a page, acting as handy bookmarks – live speed dials will display information such as the current weather in your location, the amount of unread emails you have, your Twitter feed, and maybe even stock prices. They’re an easy way to keep track of things without having to open up new windows or tabs, and there’s virtually no performance impact as well. All you need is a copy of Opera 11.5, and the rest is easy.

Use Revo Uninstaller to Completely Uninstall Software

Revo Uninstaller

It’s always encouraged here to uninstall programs that you no longer use – not only saving you a little bit of disk space, but allowing you to speed up your computer by removing startup entries, context menu entries, and other things. Using the standard Windows uninstall tool in the control panel will get rid of the application’s files, and will likely leave user data and registry entries still in your computer. It’s convenient if you want to reinstall the software later – unless you want to get rid of it completely. Enter Revo Uninstaller, a third-party uninstaller tool that will scan for leftover files and registry entries after you uninstall a program.

System Cleaners Can Actually Harm Your Computer

Piriform CCleaner

I’ve talked about CCleaner many times on this site as my favorite system cleaning tool. It removes temporary files and cleans out the registry for broken entries. The downside to using system cleaners however is that most of the time you don’t really know what it’s actually cleaning out. Through a series of PCWorld tests, it’s been determined that system cleaners can actually make your system slower than it was before – depending on which cleaner you use.

Tip: Enable the Guest Account to improve chances of getting back a lost netbook

3

My Guest Account's wallpaper

Being fairly small devices, netbooks are pretty easy to lose. Someone who picks it up is likely going to turn it on to test the device – and if they’re nice enough, try to find out who it belongs to. Chances are your netbook’s administrator user is password protected, and by enabling the Guest Account and leaving a digital imprint of your name and contact information, the chance of you getting your netbook back increases significantly.

Tip: Rebuild Windows 7′s Icon Cache to fix Broken Icons

0

Windows Quick Tip

I trust CCleaner to clean out temporary files and broken registry entries in my system, and it does a fairly good job. Nothing is perfect though, and there was a time when CCleaner accidentally broke a few icons for my applications. Even after reinstalling them, the icons failed again and again to fix themselves – until I stumbled upon a solution, rebuilding your icon cache. This can fix a corrupted icon cache by reloading all the icons for all your applications, and therefore fixing broken or missing icons.

Use Imgur Uploader for Fast Image Uploading and Sharing

Imgur Uploader

Even with tools such as Windows Live Photo Gallery that offer an easy way to upload and share images, they aren’t good solutions for fast image uploading for just one or a few images. Enter Imgur Uploader, a Windows shell extension that allows you to upload images to our favorite image hosting site, Imgur. Right click on any accepted image file, use Imgur Uploader, and bam – you now have direct links to the images you just uploaded for easy sharing and even the proper HTML codes for embedding the image onto a webpage.
